Light We all hear a lot about light in the spiritual and metaphysical community, but what do we really know about it? Light travels 186,000 feet per second. Sound travels much more slowly at 23,000 feet per second. Actions speak louder than words because we see the action through the movement of light waves long before we hear the sound waves of words. That is something to think about when you assume that a spoken apology will cancel a thoughtless or inconsiderate action. What else do we know about light? Light can deter crime. Well-lighted streets have a much lower percentage of violent crimes than dimly lit streets. Why? Because light dispels the darkness. Walking down a dark street or out into a dimly lit parking lot allows fears to flourish. Walking into a brightly-lit space eliminates those fears. What kinds of fear? Fear of the unknown, fear of loss, fear of lack…aha! What is light? Light is the unconditional love of the Father, the Creator, for us, his beloved children. We visualize in meditation bringing into our bodies the white light and love of God through our crown chakra. We visualize this light moving through each and every part of our body as it fills each and every cell with the healing power and unconditional love of God. As we consciously ask for and accept more of that love and light into our selves and into our lives, we begin to recognize the force of that light at work in our lives and we begin to see the effects of that light. We see that the darkness, the fear, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of lack, all fear is diminished in intensity and its power to affect us. The light and love of God/Spirit/Universe banishes all but joy and harmony. It balances everything within our lives so we may live the lives of peace, joy, and abundance that God intends for each of us. All of us are great and glorious beings of light hiding or disguised in a human body. Many of us have disguised it so well that we have successfully hidden the truth of who we truly are even from ourselves. We have consciously forgotten that we are these great and glorious beings of light! Luke 11: 33-36 states: “no man, when he lights a candle, puts it in a secret place, or under a bushel, but on a candlestick that others who come may see the light.” If we cover the light within, we hide the beauty of our true natures and the glory that God created. And it’s very easy to cover the light, to hide our true essence from the world. We hide our light at home when we allow the stress of everyday life to irritate us, when we honk in frustration at the drivers who cut us off on the way home, when the clerk in the grocery store is slow in checking us out, or McDonald’s isn’t fast enough. Then we go home and kick the dog, shout at the children, and take it out on our significant others. We, at that point, having totally bought in to the illusion of being human, and it is an illusion, forget that none of us originated on this planet. We originated in spirit, born of the creative efforts of a Father/Mother god/Universal life force that desired to have expression in a myriad of ways. The beings of light that we are split off from the creator, shiny shimmering, slivers of light twirling and sailing through time and space till we came upon the opportunity for physical expression in this time, on this planet. So here we are playing the ultimate game of hide and go seek. But we are both the hider and the seeker, for we each seek the light, the reality and the truth of who we really are that we have hidden even from ourselves. If a candle is hidden under a cover for too long, there is danger of it being extinguished altogether. Luckily, the light of God within us can never be extinguished. But how do we find it is it is so well hidden? St. Luke continues: “The light of the body is the eye (the eyes are the windows of the soul, they say). When the eyes are filled with light, the whole body is filled with light, as when the bright shining of a candle gives the light to all.” So we look to the eyes for light. Take a moment and look into your own eyes in a mirror, or into the eyes or a loved one. Can you not see the light of the great and glorious being that resides within? As the candle shines forth uncovered, so our light shines forth through our eyes, through our actions, which are visible to all in light waves that move at 186,000 feet per second. “Let your light shine before men.” Remember the song you may have learned as a child in Sunday school: The Christopher’s ended each television program with a beautiful saying: Those who are doing Elizabeth Mayo began studying astrology in 1970 and found that she loved it.
