Random Thoughts on Walk-ins and Metaphysics

The term “walk-in” was probably coined by Ruth Montgomery in her books “Threshold to Tomorrow” and “Strangers Among Us”, first published in the 1970’s. A walk-in is a soul who steps into a vacated body when the original soul, the one born into the body, decided for whatever reason that he or she wishes to relinquish life at this time. In most cases, this is an agreement made between the two souls before the birth of the body during the pre-birth planning stage.

This is not possession in any way but the surrender of the physical body to another soul without any karmic implications that would be present if the original soul decided to end the physical life by means of suicide, for example. Usually, the original soul has great plans for overcoming karma and learning valuable lessons through adversities, but as time passes, he or she realizes that things are not working as planned. Perhaps the circumstances that developed were not as easy to deal with as hoped and have become insurmountable. For whatever reason, the original soul decided to withdraw and a second soul who has need of a physical vehicle without the delay of growing to adulthood steps in. In almost all cases, the new soul comes in with a definite mission to fulfill.

In some cases the transference is sudden, as in the case of a serious illness or accident. In this case the new soul wakes up and has the memories of the original soul, as well as the first soul’s physical karma to complete, but the behavior may be quite different from the original soul. These are instantaneous and the changes of the personality are noticed more by friends and family members.

I have a friend whose son was very close to her at age eighteen. He confided in her and was very affectionate. The connection was so strong between them that she would be in the car driving to school before the office called to say he was sick. Because of a severe medical condition at eighteen, he had a two hour surgery to save his life. He went under anesthesia as the same loving and funny boy she had given birth to and raised. When he woke in the recovery room, he asked first for his girlfriend. His personality was strikingly different. Later his mother laughing accused the surgeon of having removed his sense of humor! She chalked it all up to his age, the seriousness of the experience, and his fear of not surviving the operation. Five years later, while immersed in a metaphysical class, it occurred to her that perhaps this was the explanation for her son’s bizarre changes. When the transfer was confirmed by her own guides, she actually went through a period of mourning the loss of the original soul, even though there is much love for the man her son has become.

The mother, Susan, is also a walk-in but her experience was much different. She grew up in an alcoholic household during her teen years; things were very bad for her. Her seventeenth year is still only a blur to her. There were no severely traumatic incidents that precipitated the transfer. Susan feels it was a transfer agreed upon before the birth of the physical being. She is not aware of anything unusual transpiring but she recalls feeling on her eighteenth birthday as though she had emerged from a fog. Her mind was clearer; she was more confident and assured. The wallflower that she had been before blossomed very quickly into a vivacious young woman who performed in local theatre productions, sang in public, and asserted her own will in the family. Years later, when Montgomery’s book came out, Susan’s mother read it and gave it to Susan with the suggestion that perhaps that’s what had transpired. It made perfect sense to Susan and explained a lot of the things that happened during that year of her life.

In talking about this, Susan said that she could see the karma of the original soul that she had accepted, some of it dealt with and some still to overcome, as well as the “stuff” she brought in to accomplish. She said that it’s kind of like studying for your doctorate and offering to do your classmate’s dissertation at the same time!

All walk-ins have a higher purpose and a definite reason for being allowed to step into a body without having to undergo the childhood experience (depending on the age at the time of transfer). Each walk-in situation has circumstances and karmic implications unique to the souls involved. Sometimes the new soul does not realize that a transfer has taken place and the higher purpose may not be revealed for years. It’s been thirty years since Susan’s walk-in. In the last ten years she has come to a complete and conscious knowledge of who she is, what she is here to accomplish, and how to go about doing it.

Every walk-in comes in with a purpose, but they are not necessarily called to fame and notoriety in their missions. Sometimes the mission is to be in the right place at the right time to give the right word of encouragement to the right person in order to ensure that an event happens at the proper time and in the proper manner. Walk-ins are not necessarily here to develop the theory of relativity, discover the cure for cancer, or build the first warp drive engine. Some are here because the best huggers in the Universe! Remember, walk-ins still have to go to work, do the laundry, wash dishes, and all those other earthly mundane things.

Yes, they are Light Beings, as are many others, but all are spiritual beings as well having a human experience and are subject to all the demands of life in a three dimensional body on a three dimensional planet.

How do you know if you are a walk-in? Read “Strangers Among Us” and see if the information rings true for you. Remember, though, the bottom line is the quality of each and every day that you live in the third dimension upon this planet. Whether or not you are a walk-in or the original soul, you have plenty of karma to deal with, lots of lessons to learn, and a mission to complete, Knowing whether or not you are a walk-in could resolve some questions about your life, but you still have to live that life day by day.
